Molten Lava Cake also known as Gateaux Cake or Chocolate Petit Gateaux – is a decadent, creamy dessert that can be made even by the humblest of bakers. Oh, I must confess I do not often indulge in vast trials of such inventions. But given all the free time lately – I declare – why not!
If you are indeed a timid baker as I am, this miniature cake is effortless, and its list of ingredients is quite simple. All you need is a bit of time and a warm oven.
I almost forgot, you also might need another person nearby to share the joy of devouring this scrumptious delight.
A little history about Chocolate Petit Gateaux:
“A petit gâteau, or chocolate fondant, is a dessert composed of a small chocolate cake with crunchy rind and mellow filling that is conventionally served hot with vanilla ice cream on a plate.
In French, the terms for the chocolate cake are “gâteau fondant au chocolat” or simply “fondant au chocolat” (“chocolate chewy” or “chocolate melty”).
The dessert has been popularized in New York City restaurants since the 1990s. Nowadays, variations of the cake and ice cream flavors have come to include fruits and even alcoholic beverages, such as whisky.” – Wikipedia
How to make Chocolate Petit Gateaux:
- 200g semi-sweetened chocolate
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 2 TBSP butter (unsalted)
- 2 TBSP all-purpose flour
- 2 eggs
- 2 egg yolks
- Melt the butter and the chocolate in a saucepan.
- Beat the eggs, egg yolks, and sugar for 3 min, until fluffy.
- Add the flour and chocolate.
- Pour the batter into heatproof ramekins.
- Bake in 450F oven for 6 to 7 minutes until the edges are set, and the middle is still soft.
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar or fresh berries. Serve immediately with vanilla ice cream or fruit preserves.
